Meet our Founder

The Lights On® story starts with a nine-year-old girl, disheartened, bored and frustrated at school, telling her mother, ‘You may as well send me to prison every day’.

That mother was Julia Black. And she decided to do something about it.

“I’m a social entrepreneur to my core, driven by a deep passion to give children the freedom to learn through their strengths. When we find that thing we were born to explore, we enter the realm of infinite possibilities. This is where I love to play with potential - beyond the edges of our comfort zone.

As a mother of two young adults I understand the challenges and joy of parenting. I bring that perspective to everything I do. As an educationalist and Master Neurocoach I also understand learning, exponential growth and human potential on a really deep level.

Julia was awarded the NCPTA Gold Star for Changing the Life Of The School in 2010, an achievement that sparked her dedication to educational innovation.

Nominated for both BAFTA and Grierson awards for her work as a documentary director, Julia holds an MA in International Relations and is a certified Master Neurocoach.
